How did gun rights get tangled up in the DC voting legislation?  TheArea encourages you to contact your local city council member and Councilmember-At-Large Kwame Brown to voice your concern over this systemic barrier that is promoting taxation without representation for an indefinite amount of time.  If the legislation contains a mixed bag of issues, it will get a mixed bag of support and never be passed.

We are not saying that gun rights should not be examined, we are saying that if it is deemed such a critical issue, gun rights should be examined as a separate piece of legislation.  DC voting rights are an historical issue that should be addressed as an independent body of legislation.  Let your council member know and hold them accountable.   Due to DC’s unique circumstance as a district and not a state, we need to demand partnerships between congressional representatives and our local leaders to get this done.

All young professionals in the area should take action, particularly on behalf of those who do not have the means to do so.  We hope Delegate Norton is working diligently as well, although, taxation without representation would make that a bit hard.

The Great Skate Escape

Can’t stand the heat?  Head to the ice skating rink.  The Fort Dupont Ice Arena in greater southeast Washington has released it’s summer calendar.  Check out Skate for Fitness, Adult Lessons, ICE Camp for kids and teens, or shoot the breeze (or the duck…) during the summer public skating hours. Find an activity for the girlfriends, your significant other, or your whole family.  Enjoy!

Another Use for Church Hats

Our first thought was: Can you really name a horse Rachel? Well, we got our answer after the one and 3/16 mile track was completed by Rachel Alexandra 1:55 minutes later (We now know the origin of the phrase “a mile a minute”). At the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Rachel became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness Stakes.

Read: Filly = female horse under the age of 4.

Considering Big Drama who wreaked havoc at the starting line, and the masculine named horse Musket Man coming in 3rd, Rachel is an appropriate name for any filly that can win the second jewel in the Triple Crown. She had a new jockey who transferred from the first jewel’s winning horse. Let’s see if he sticks with Rachel for the last race.

Bring out your best church hat, think DC’s Arena Stage Crowns style, and we’ll add Preakness into Things To Do 2010.
