How did gun rights get tangled up in the DC voting legislation? TheArea encourages you to contact your local city council member and Councilmember-At-Large Kwame Brown to voice your concern over this systemic barrier that is promoting taxation without representation for an indefinite amount of time. If the legislation contains a mixed bag of issues, it will get a mixed bag of support and never be passed.
We are not saying that gun rights should not be examined, we are saying that if it is deemed such a critical issue, gun rights should be examined as a separate piece of legislation. DC voting rights are an historical issue that should be addressed as an independent body of legislation. Let your council member know and hold them accountable. Due to DC’s unique circumstance as a district and not a state, we need to demand partnerships between congressional representatives and our local leaders to get this done.
All young professionals in the area should take action, particularly on behalf of those who do not have the means to do so. We hope Delegate Norton is working diligently as well, although, taxation without representation would make that a bit hard.
